Suspect charged with DUI, hit-and-run, more
A suspected drunken driver is accused of breaking into an apartment building after a hit-and-run crash in Butler.
City police arrested Shaddi J. Shanaa, 26, of Lyndora a short time after the alleged series of incidents early Friday morning.
District Judge Wayne Seibel arraigned Shanaa on a felony charge of trespass and misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence. He also was cited for hit-and-run and driving with an open container of alcohol.
Police began the investigation after a man called 911 around 2:20 a.m. and identified the defendant as having wrecked a car into a sign and fence on Race Street, authorities said. The caller, who previously knew Shanaa, said he saw the crash.
Moments before the wreck, according to the 911 call, Shanaa had been drinking at a nearby bar. But that's not all the caller told the dispatcher.
The caller reported that the defendant followed him back to his apartment on North Main Street, and had broken into a secured common stairwell, police said.
The caller and other acquaintances there pushed Shanaa out of the building. That's when the man called 911.
Police said they did not have a motive for the incident.
Officers soon found Shanaa at Jefferson and Chestnut streets. He appeared to be intoxicated, police said, and they found him with a car key in his pocket.
The key, investigators said, was for the car that police found wrecked and damaged on Race Street. In the car was an open bottle of vodka.
Police took him to the station, but he allegedly refused to take a breath test.
Shanaa remains in the Butler County Prison on $2,500 bond while awaiting his preliminary hearing March 2. Online court records did not list an attorney for him.
