Back to back
JEFFERSON TWP — Knoch is no stranger to big runs. The Knights have used them all season to break opponents' morale.
But this one was different, for it opened the door to history.
Leading Section 1-4A foe Freeport by five points after the first quarter, the host Knights dropped a 29-8 bomb on the Yellowjackets, spurring a dominant 90-47 boys basketball victory Tuesday night.
The win clinches a share of the section title with Highlands for the second straight year, giving Knoch back-to-back section crowns for the first time since the program won three straight 1967-69.
In short, it was a great way to celebrate Senior Recognition Night at Knoch (18-2, 9-1).
“We got a taste of this last year, but didn't clinch it on our home court,” said Knoch senior forward Brady McKee. “This is pretty special.”
Freeport (3-16, 1-9) held an early lead and sparked by Matt Aulicino's four baskets in the first period, trailed just 22-17 after eight minutes of play.
But Knoch's offense hit another gear in the second as the Knights sank 12 of their 14 attempts from the field. Senior Jared Schrecengost led the way, scoring 10 of his 16 points during the outburst.
“Other teams may have one or two guys who are hard to stop,” said McKee. “Our entire starting five, even our sixth and seventh guys on the bench, we can all score. This team is capable of anything.”
According to Knoch coach Ron McNabb, senior point guard Jake Scheidt is at the core of his team's ability to run away from teams.
“He can make it up the court in two or three seconds,” he said. “Our guys know they need to run and if they do, they're getting a layup.”
Freeport's early momentum was swallowed up and the Yellowjackets' seven turnovers in the second quarter certainly did not help matters.
The 'Jackets trailed 51-25 at halftime.
“We were playing a good team that had a chance to be section co-champs,” said Freeport coach Wayne Greiser. “They got up big and we started pressing. They made us do things we don't normally do.”
Knoch's patented balanced scoring yielded more impressive numbers. Scott Fraser led all scorers with 21 while Ryan Lang (17), Schrecengost and McKee (13) all reached double figures.
Aulicino scored 15 for Freeport.
Knoch has now won 18 of its last 19 games.
“This season has been incredible,” said McNabb. “The No. 1 reason for that is we have great players. We don't have to ask them to work hard and they do everything they need to do.
“I love these guys and I love coaching them.”
