After canceling classes at the high school twice this week due to threats, all schools in the Mars School District will be closed Friday as the district and Adams Township police investigate “rumors of possible violence.”

A letter sent to parents Thursday night from Superintendent Wesley Shipley did not name any specific threat to the schools in Mars, and the superintendent could not be reached for comment.

“While Adams Township Police Department has yet to substantiate these rumors and is continuing its investigation, the district is closing its schools on Friday, Oct. 19, out of an abundance of caution,” Shipley wrote.

In addition to canceling classes, all school district-sponsored, on-campus activities that were scheduled for Friday have been canceled. The varsity football game at Kiski Area High School will be played.

The cancellation comes after Mars High School was evacuated on Tuesday and Wednesday following a bomb threat. After a search of the school, students were allowed to return to the campus.

After Wednesday’s bomb threat, Shipley said the school district would take legal action if and when a suspect is identified.

“We will press charges to the full extent of the law,” Shipley told the Butler Eagle.

To date, no one has been charged in the earlier bomb threats.

As he did following this week’s earlier incidents, Shipley’s letter Thursday asked for anyone with information to contact the Adams Township police.

“The district strives to remain proactive in the protection of our students, faculty and staff members,” Shipley wrote in the letter explaining the latest incident. “We thank you for your patience and cooperation as the district continues to investigate this matter.”
