A Fayette County man abandoned his desire to take his criminal case to trial on Wednesday by pleading guilty to seriously injuring an elderly man and stealing 12 firearms during a home invasion in 2017.

David Cody Boggs, 26, of Uniontown pleaded guilty to burglary, robbery, theft and aggravated assault for his role in the Dec. 2, 2017, crime. As part of his deal, Boggs will be sentenced later this summer and he is looking at a sentence of six to 12 years in prison, according to a deal reached between Boggs' attorney and the District Attorney's Office.

Investigators said Boggs was one of two robbers who brutally beat 74-year-old Robert Patterson after breaking into the victim's house on Euclid Road in Clay Township and stealing a dozen guns.

The other alleged robber, Michael E. Karch, 38, of Butler, committed suicide almost four weeks after the crime and was never charged.

Boggs was arrested leaving a halfway house in Uniontown on March 23, 2018, according to police. In addition to attempted homicide, he was originally charged with burglary, robbery, theft, aggravated assault, conspiracy to commit the crimes of burglary, robbery, theft and aggravated assault and receiving stolen property, all felonies. He was also charged with simple assault and conspiracy to commit simple assault, both misdemeanors.

A relative discovered Patterson around 6 p.m. Dec. 2 at the victim's home, police said.

He had been tied up with an electrical extension cord for 12 hours and suffered a broken nose, two dislocated shoulders, a fractured ankle and several cuts on his head that required stitches.

Patterson told investigators that he answered a knock at the door around 6 a.m. Two men appeared and forced their way inside. He did not recognize them.

Both were armed — one with a handgun and the other with a knife. The men beat him and ransacked the house, taking the guns that were in a safe. Boggs will be sentenced on July 18.

Another defendant also took a plea deal during a jury selection hearing on Wednesday.

Chad Eric Heasley Jr., 30, of Russelton pleaded guilty to stealing seven guns — including two shotguns, two rifles, three handguns and 600 rounds of ammunition — from an Adams Township home on July 2. The plea deal calls for Heasley's incarceration for a total of 36 to 72 months for conspiracy-burglary, theft and burglary. He will be sentenced on June 27.

Heasley's lawyer, Bobette Magnusen, noted that Heasley is being investigated by the Secret Service and was indicted on federal charges related to counterfeit checks.
