Julie Hranica

Julie Hranica of Sarver was honored as the distinguished club president for the Circle K Club at Mercyhurst College at the Circle K district convention March 27 to 29.She received the Most Outstanding President Award in the state as well as a plaque and certificate. A slide show of her work was shown.Her 534 hours of community service also earned her the Diamond Level Service Achievement award.Hranica was elected as the new district editor for Circle K and will write "The Krier" and design its Web site.She also is involved in the Ambassadors Club, Americorps and ESO. She is a junior elementary and special education major and is the daughter of Edward and Donna Hranica of Sarver.Fifth grade students from

Allegheny-Clarion Valley Elementary School in Foxburg had the opportunity to predict the weather when teacher Stacey Fox's science students used videoconferencing to connect with the Center for Educational Technologies at Wheeling Jesuit University.The students were taking part in STORM-E, a distance learning program.Students became experts in air pressure, humidity, wind, and temperature. Using maps, graphs, and charts during the simulation, students advised "Weather Central" of changing weather conditions.

Elisa Nesbitt of Butler on March 29 received the President's Freshman Award at the student awards recognition ceremony at Penn State University Shreyer Honors College.The award is given to undergraduates who earned a 4.0 grade point average.Nesbitt is the daughter of Dr. Scott and Susan Nesbitt of Butler.

Maxwell McCurdy of Butler was cast as Le Beau in the Baldwin-Wallace College production of "As You Like It" by William Shakespeare.The production will run April 22 to 26 at the college in Berea, Ohio.McCurdy is a 2008 graduate of Butler High School and is the son of Zane and Mary McCurdy of Butler. He is a theater major.

Michelle Iman was recently accepted for enrollment at Edinboro University.She is a senior at Seneca Valley High School and the daughter of Carol Iman of Zelienople.Iman plans to enroll this fall as a social work major.

Caitlin Dituro was recently accepted for enrollment at Edinboro University.She is a senior at Moniteau High School and is the daughter of Michael and Cindy Dituro of West Sunbury.Dituro plans to enroll this fall as an art major.

Kyle Connell of Cranberry Township on March 17 was presented with the Vincent Cestone Scholarship and the Sophomore Achievement Prize at Seton Hall University.Connell is a junior majoring in finance and leadership development.

Randy Bartlett, both of Slippery Rock, were inducted into Thiel College's chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, the international honor society in education.

Desiree Palmieri of Cranberry Township was inducted into the Seton Hill University National College Athlete Honor Society, Chi Alpha Sigma. Student-athletes must be a junior or senior and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.4 or higher to be eligible.Students from Butler County schools earned first place in contests conducted by the American Legion.• Senior oratorical contest,

Shannon Gallagher of Center Township. She is the daughter of Michael and Kathee Gallagher and a junior at Butler High School. Gallagher's speech was on freedom of religion.• American Legion essay contest,

Joe Ashenden of Penn Township. He is the son of Nicholas and Meg Ashenden and a senior at Knoch High School. His essay was on expanding energy resources and also won first place in the District 26 contest in Beaver, Butler and Lawrence counties.• Junior oratorical contest,

Joshua Burd of Saxonburg. He is the son of James and Nelda Burd and is in eighth grade at Knoch Middle School. His speech was on slavery.The National Environmental Education Foundation and The Weather Channel announced that

Caroline Blauser, a junior at Allegheny-Clarion Valley High School, was among 29 students nationwide awarded a grant to complete an environmental project.Blauser plans to construct a composting bin for her school.
