Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, awarded undergraduate summer research fellowships to the following area students:
• Zachary Bear of Mars is studying “Advanced Compressed Elastomer Dampers for Earthquake Hazard Reduction to Steel Frames.”
• Andrea Chiodo of Valencia is studying “Understanding Fe Protoporphyrin Deposition in Order to Increase the Selectivity of a Hydrogen Sulfide Detecting Electrode.”
• Joslyn Mesing of Freedom is studying “VIZ: Creating and Assessing Games to Enhance Spatial Cognition.”
• Jay Patel of Emlenton is studying “Anatomical Basis to UV Reflectance in Brown Anole Dewlaps.”
• Kristan Russell of Harrisville is studying “The Electrophysiological Correlates of Metaphor Processing.”
• Emily Savage of Slippery Rock is studying “Coevolution of Acropyga Ants, Xenococcine Mealybugs and Their Associated Endosymbionts.”

Manuel Alcantara III and Abby Gallagher, both of Butler, were accepted to the University of Pittsburgh Titusville.
They are both 2012 graduates of Butler High School.
Alcantara is the son of Theodore and Jackie Alcantara of Butler.
He was a part of the All School Musicals, Thespian Troup 1729, Pennsylvania Junior Classical League, marching band, symphonic band and the track and field team.
Gallagher is the daughter of Vaughn and Darline Gallagher of Butler.
She was a part of the Spanish Club and rifle team. Gallagher received a varsity letter for rifle and won the team’s most valuable player award.

Andrew Mextorf of Grove City was named to the president’s list at Mansfield University.

Logan Pfeffer of Cranberry Township won the Brockport’s Honors and Recognition Scholarship from The College at Brockport, State University of New York.

Casey Paul of Cabot was a student leader for Lock Haven University’s summer orientation for future freshmen and their families.

Caroline Owen of Cranberry Township, who is majoring in visual arts, was named to the president’s list at Clemson University.

Nora Wagner, a student at Butler High School, has been selected to attend the 2012 Washington Youth Summit on the Environment at George Mason University.
Nora will join 250 students from all over the country for an intensive study of leadership in environmental science and conservation.

Erin Lopresti of Cranberry Township was named to the president’s list at James Madison University.

Marla Crawford of Valencia and Rebecca Raraigh of Fombell completed a 12-day pilgrimage to Rome with Saint Vincent College.
