Josh Bowser

Josh Bowser, an eighth grader at Slippery Rock Middle School, received a School Award from the American Legion Post 393 at their Memorial Day service.

The award is presented to one female and one male eighth grader at Slippery Rock Middle School who demonstrates high qualities of courage, honor, leadership, patriotism, scholarship and service necessary to the preservation and protection of the fundamental institutions of the government and the advancement of society.

Josh is the son Mike and Kris Bowser of Slippery Rock.

Samantha Roos, Dan Swierkowski and Megan Blauser won Crew Scholarships from McDonald's.Local McDonald's restaurants of Butler that are owned by Kilarney Restaurant Management awards this scholarship to deserving crew persons who are high school seniors planning to continue their higher education or returning college students.Scholarship winners were awarded based on job performance, outstanding performance in academics and community involvement.———

The Slippery Rock High School Alumni Association awarded the following high school seniors scholarships at its annual alumni dinner on June 16.Julia McGuire won the Dr. Ross M. Gill Memorial Scholarship.Chrichelle McDeavitt won the Robert J. Jones Memorial Scholarship.Ryan Thompson won the Corey R. Jones Memorial Scholarship.Christiana Chmielewski won the Zajac-Youngman Basketball Scholarship.Michal Domaradski won the Evelyn Rodgers Memorial Scholarship.Michelle Hartzell won the McCoy-Crocker Memorial Scholarship and the William A. Speer Memorial Scholarship.Dylan Parson and Megan Magliocca won SRHS Alumni scholarships.———

Michelle Flynn, a 2011 graduate of Mars High School, has been accepted to the Porthouse Academy of Theater Summer Studies Program at Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.The program is an affiliate of Kent State University's School of Theater and Dance.Flynn has been named to the professional summer stock theater cast of Rodgers and Hammerstein's, “Sound of Music.”Flynn, the daughter of Phyllis and Daniel Flynn of Mars, is a sophomore at Kent State University pursuing studies in music and theater.———

Three area baking and pastry students at Indiana (Pa.) University's Academy of Culinary Arts are completing studies with a professional externship.Michelle Blank of Butler is an extern at Giant Eagle in Cranberry, Robert Gottschalk of Evans City is an extern at the Vanilla Pastry Studio in Pittsburgh and Heather Oesterling of Butler is an extern at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Farmington.Blank is the daughter of Wayne and Christine Blank and is a 2010 graduate of Knoch High School.Gottschalkis is the son of Linda Gottschalk and is a 2010 graduate of Seneca Valley High School.Oesterling is the daughter of Debbie and Mike Oesterling and is a 2010 graduate of Butler County Area Vocational-Technical School.———

Morgan Ireland of Slippery Rock received a $2,000 Raymond A. Krome Scholarship from the Pennsylvania Masonic Youth Foundation.Ireland is the daughter of Shawn Ireland, a member of Grove City Lodge No. 603.She was selected from more than 180 applicants for this scholarship.Ireland will attend Community College of Beaver County to study professional piloting.She is a 2012 graduate of Slippery Rock High School.———

Chaney Best of Middlesex Township participated in the C-MITES Summer Program at Carnegie Mellon University.Chaney is the son of Kristen Volek and is a sixth grade student at Holy Sepulcher School.———Bryan Vavro of Butler was named to the president's list at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh.
