EVANSTON, Ill. — Two Seneca Valley High School students and two homeschool students are 2013 National Merit Scholarship semifinalists.
Seneca Valley seniors Dhruv Kohli and Katharine Miller will compete for one of 8,300 National Merit Scholarships to be awarded in the spring.
Homeschool students Robert Shemer of Cranberry Township and Anna Munson of Grove City also are in the running.
Semifinalists are chosen based on the results of a qualifying test and represent less than one percent of high school seniors.
Finalists are chosen based on their skills, accomplishments and potential for college success.
American Legion awards scholarshipsMariah Clark, Jenna Hutchison and Kelsey Starcher were each awarded a $500 scholarship from West Sunbury American Legion Post 243.Clark is the daughter of Steve and Diane Clark. She is attending Butler County Community College to become a registered nurse.Hutchison is the daughter of Dena and Jeff Hutchison. She is attending Indiana (Pa.) University to study culinary arts.Starcher is the daughter of Valerie Starcher. She is attending the Bradford School in Pittsburgh to become a dental assistant.———Justin Sapar, a 2012 Butler High School graduate, placed seventh out of 472 competitors at the national Future Business Leaders of America competition on June 27-30 in San Antonio, Texas.Sapar competed in computer programming immediately after he attended the National Skills USA competition in Kansas City, Mo., June 23-27. He placed 13th out of 40 competitors there in computer maintenance technology.Luke Jackman, also a 2012 Butler High School graduate, placed 11th out of 44 competitors in cabinet making at the event.———Kurt Stridinger of Valencia, a theater and business management major at Indiana (Pa.) University, is a cast member in a student-directed production of the 1979 play “Bent.”Stridinger is the son of Kurt and Jennifer Stridinger and is a 2009 graduate of Mars High School.He will play the role of Max in the production. He has previously performed in other campus plays, including “Three Sisters” and “Veronica’s Room.”———Kiley Clinton, a pre-veterinary medicine major, has enrolled as a freshman at the University of Findlay for the 2012-13 academic year.Clinton, a 2012 graduate of Butler High School, is the daughter of Annette and Jeffrey Clinton of Cabot.Clinton was awarded the Trustees Scholarship from the university.———Katie Williams of Mars has enrolled in Marietta College’s McDonough Leadership Program.
