Late run bounces Rockets
FARRELL — Rebounds and turnovers. They're not popular words right now with the Slippery Rock girls basketball team.
Both played prominent roles in ending the Rockets' season Saturday afternoon.
Hollidaysburg took advantage of Slippery Rock's subpar play on both ends of the court, reeling off a 25-10 run in the final 10 minutes of a PIAA Class 5A first-round playoff to prevail 64-49 at Farrell High School.
The Rockets (18-8) tied the score at 39 with Anna Kadlubek's basket with 2:36 left in the third quarter. Soon after, the Golden Tigers moved ahead for good on Alison Hatajik's bucket after she pulled down an offensive rebound.
Slippery Rock coach Amber Osborn voiced her concern over her team's inability to close out Grove City possessions with rebounds in a recent loss to the Eagles in the District 10 championship game.
The problem continued on Saturday. Hollidaysburg out-rebounded Slippery Rock 32-25, but even that margin belies the frustration the Rockets were dealt by a number of offensive rebounds controlled by the Tigers.
During back-to-back possessions in the third quarter, Hollidaysburg rebounded five of its own missed shots.
“I can't quite put my finger on it,” said Osborn. “All I can say is that it is a lack of effort to go find a body. You don't have to get every rebound, but make sure the (opposing) player you're on doesn't get it, either.
“It has to be a mind-set.”
Compounding the Rockets' troubles were turnovers. Slippery Rock had just five of them in the first half, after which it held a slim 33-32 lead. Eleven miscues marred its effort in the second half.
“We locked things down on defense and rushed Slippery Rock into some shots,” said Hollidaysburg coach Deanna Jubeck. “We knew Slippery Rock had players that get after it, but our kids played hard-nosed and tough.”
The Tigers (18-7) scored the first six points of the final period to take a 51-39 lead. Kadlubek then sank a trey and another basket in the span of 42 seconds to cut the deficit to seven points, but the Tigers scored 10 of the next 13 points to ice the game.
Slippery Rock led for most of the first half, despite not having Kelly Benson on the court for much of that span. The junior guard picked up her third foul just 3:51 into the game.
“I thought some of the fouls called today were ticky-tack,” said Osborn. “We are a physical team and I don't want to tell our players to play soft.”
When Kadlubek drained a trey with 5:40 remaining in the second quarter, Slippery Rock had its largest lead of the game at 27-20. But the Tigers chipped away and Morgan O'Neill hit a 3-pointer in the closing seconds of the first half to slice her team's deficit to just one point.
Hollidaysburg featured balanced scoring that helped extend its season. Junior guard Alyssa Bell led the way with 15 points, Marin Miller scored 13 and Allison Hileman and O'Neill both tallied 12.
Kadlubek led all scorers with 20 points and Hallie Raabe contributed 16 for Slippery Rock, including 12 in the first half.
The Rockets do have a bright future.
“That's the great news,” said Osborn. “Everybody's back next year. Add Ackerman (Maryann, injured swing player) to it, hopefully we'll have eight or nine kids we can rotate in.”
