Jeremy Borkowski, gifted coordinator for the Moniteau School District, was awarded the Richard P. and Dorothy Simmons Award for Excellence in the Study of Economics.

The award was given by EconomicsPennsylvania at the 2012 Adam Smith Leadership Award luncheon held Oct. 19 at the Omni William Penn Hotel in Pittsburgh.

Evan Miller, Amanda Mock and Angela Schandelmeier, Moniteau High School students who have worked with Borkowski for six years, also earned certificates for their support of EconomicsPennsylvania.

The Moniteau School District sent two teams of four to the state championship of the Economics Challenge on April 12 in Harrisburg.

The teams qualified for the state championship competition by placing first and second overall at the regional tournament March 29 at Robert Morris University, defeating the seven-time champion Upper St. Clair High School.

Union sends 4 to state conferenceUnion High School’s student council selected Beau Rankin, Tori Vasbinder, Leah Milliron, and Billy Vanderbilt to attend the 76th PASC State Conference Nov. 1 to 3 in New Castle.The conference theme was “Ignite Yourself, Your School and Your Community to Serve Others.”The schedule included student led workshops, fireworks on Friday night and keynote speakers Stacey Bess, Heather Schultz and Ian Tyson.Union’s student council donated $200 toward the State Charity fund to fill the library of Ivory Park, South Africa.

Thiel College recognizes studentsThe following Butler County students were recognized at the Thiel College Honors Convocation on Nov. 2:Alyssa Bartlett of Slippery Rock received a Thiel Presidential Scholarship.Kayce Grimm of Petrolia received the Nathan Warren Harter and Besse R. Harter Scholarship in math.Samantha Hoffman of Slippery Rock received the Sebastian Mueller Honor Scholarship, the Michael Andrew Holland ’75 Memorial Scholarship and the Huether Foundation Endowment for Business.Sean Johnston of Valencia received the Dr. Roy H. Johnson American Government Award and the Slaney Family Scholarship.Emily Petrak of Butler received a Stewart Academic Scholarship, the Irene Wintersteen Memorial Science Scholarship, the Charles ’57 and Edna Semroc Scholarship and the ACS/SA Sophomore Chemistry Award in honor of Dr. Henry M. McLaughlin.Joseph Hertzog of Butler received the Dr. Roy H. Johnson Memorial Political Science Award. He is also a member of Alpha Chi, Thiel’s highest academic honor society.Sheena Johns of Worthington received the Sebastian Mueller Honor Scholarship and the Dr. Georgianne Stary Award.Matthew Schneider of Butler received the Knute E.
