CHERRY TWP — For the third year in a row, 7th and 8th grade students from Moniteau Junior-Senior High School earned first place at the state ASL Pentathlon Competition in Erie.

The competition topic was World War I. The team has been invited to participate in the national competition.

In addition to winning the overall championship, the team earned first place in the Super Quiz Oral Relay.

The Moniteau Pentathlon team members are Lacey Blauser, Weston Kimmey and James Parenti for the honors division; Tyler McFadden, Matt Dodgson and Steven Fawcett for the scholastic division; and Hunter Hodak and Kenny Wagner for the varsity division. Melissa Baker is the team coach.

During the competition, students demonstrated their knowledge of World War I. The individual medals each received in their divisions are below.

For overall individual score, Weston Kimmey won second, Lacey Blauser won third and Matt Dodgson won third.

For fine arts, Kimmey won first, Blauser won second, Dodgson won second, Tyler McFadden won third and Hunter Hodak won second.

For science, Kimmey won second and McFadden won first.

For social science, Kimmey won first.

BATON ROUGE, La. — The following students were recognized by the honor society Phi Kappa Phi:

Andrea Bragiel of Freeport and Steven Moon of Cranberry Township were inducted into the Indiana (Pa.) University chapter.

Amanda Hinchberger of Saxonburg and Brandon Starr of Cranberry Township were inducted into the Pennsylvania State University chapter.

Ellen Balkey of Butler was inducted into three honor societies and recognized for scholastic excellence, academic achievement and community volunteerism at Pennsylvania State University.

She is a new member of Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society; the National Society of Leadership and Success, Sigma Alpha Pi; and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.

Balkey is a freshman majoring in communicative sciences disorders and audiology. She graduated from Knoch High School in 2013.

BUFFALO TWP — Freeport High School received eight awards, tying with two other schools for the most, at the 21st annual Television and Video Teachers Student Video Awards at Robert Morris University.

The students received Awards of Excellence in six categories: school announcements, commercial, documentary, show opening, animation and magazine format.

Nathan Williams and Alyssa Lang, both juniors, won Best of Category for their news package about a student council blood drive.

Students of television news production, third period, won Best of Category for a public service announcement on competitive reading groups.

Teacher Tawnya Lunz works with the television and video students at the school.

BUTLER TWP — Five students represented Butler School District in the Pennsylvania Music Educators’ Association (PMEA) All-State Honors Ensembles.

All-State Choir participants were Dan Terwilliger and Lily Murray.

All-State Orchestra participants were Josh Croup, Maria Gregor and Gracie Ryan.

The achievement required auditions at several increasingly competitive levels and culminated with a concert in Hershey.

MARS — Taylor Ann Vancheri, a senior at Mars High School, was a merit finalist in the Pennsylvania Association of Community Bankers’ Foundation Scholarship Program.

Taylor Ann’s activities include class council, National Honor Society and soccer team participation.

As she continues her education, she plans to study supply chain management.

HARRISBURG — The team of Allison Lanza, Tessa Cybach and Madison Brown, students at Mars High School, received third place in the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board High School/Middle School Alcohol Education Public Service Announcement Video Contest.

The students used their creativity and technical ability to produce a 30-second message discouraging their peers from drinking alcohol.

The winning videos from the contest will be featured on the PLCB Bureau of Alcohol Education’s Facebook and YouTube pages and may be used as part of a statewide alcohol education campaign.

NATRONA HEIGHTS — Holly Wolfe of Sarver was honored with second place in the life sciences category of the 50th annual Pennsylvania Junior Science and Humanities Symposium.

Holly is a sophomore at St. Joseph High School. She is the daughter of Barry and Julie Wolfe.
