Man sentenced to prison

Parole deal rejected in assault case

An Oakland Township man who assaulted his ex-girlfriend and allegedly killed her baby ducks went to prison Tuesday.

That wasn’t supposed to happen under the terms of 36-year-old Marshall W. Karenbauer’s original plea agreement with prosecutors, which called for Karenbauer to face the same sentence but to be paroled immediately at sentencing.

But when Karenbauer, who pleaded guilty to felony assault, appeared in court in March to be sentenced, victim Mary C. Wetzel spoke up to Butler County Judge William Shaffer.

According to court records, Karenbauer kicked a burning bed pillow onto Wetzel during a 1 a.m. altercation at his Oakland Township home July 1.

Wetzel, during the March hearing, stressed that she wasn’t the only one victimized by the incident. Police records allege the assault on Wetzel began when she returned to Karenbauer’s house to find him in an altercation with her now 14-year-old son, and her belongings had been thrown into the yard.

Wetzel was trying to gather the belongings, when Karenbauer allegedly kicked the burning pillow onto her.

Wetzel said her son saw her on fire “and he still hears my screams any time he thinks of that night.”

Her daughter saw her later, and “she said that it looked like my skin was falling off. She can see that even now when she closes her eyes,” she said.

In addition to physical pain, Wetzel alleged Karenbauer hurt her emotionally during the attack.

“Marshall kicked my four baby ducks like footballs, killing them right in front of us. I trained them to come to my voice, but this time it was to their death ... My other ducks were killed or given away (while I was in the hospital), and I hate him for that because he knew how I loved them and they could not defend themselves against his violence.”

After hearing from Wetzel, the judge rejected the plea deal, and Karenbauer appeared in court Tuesday with the revised deal. Now he goes to prison for 9 to 18 months.

Wetzel spoke again, thanking the judge for his effort in the case.

Karenbauer also spoke, apologizing.

“I made a mistake that night,” he said.
