Two suspects charged with stealing purse Police: Men followed woman home from store

Two suspected robbers are accused of following a woman from a store and taking her purse as she entered her Center Township home last month.

One defendant, Marcos Roman, 38, of Butler, is being held in the Butler County Prison on $75,000 bond. The other defendant, Ramon E. Acevedo-Carrasquillo, 34, of Ocala, Fla., authorities said, is in a Florida jail awaiting extradition.

Both men are charged with robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, theft and receiving stolen property. Police filed charges July 17 following the investigation that began about 9:10 a.m. June 7 when the victim reported she was robbed at her home on Pal Mar Road.

The woman told investigators that she had returned from grocery shopping at Walmart in Butler Township, and was bringing the groceries into her house when someone ripped her purse from her shoulder, police said.

The robber “jumped into the passenger seat” of a car, according to charging documents, and the car headed south onto Route 308.

Police said the purse contained $8 in currency, a wallet, credit and debit cards, a cell phone and personal information.

Later that day, Trooper Brian Palko went to Walmart to retrace the victim's steps before the incident. Video surveillance from the store, police said, aided in the investigation.

The video footage allegedly captured the victim's sport utility vehicle and what was believed to be the suspects' Toyota Corolla at the Walmart parking lot. The video, police said, showed the car pull behind the SUV as the woman drove from the store's lot at 8:58 a.m.

Police from Butler Township and Butler also assisted in the investigation, during which the Toyota's owner, a Florida woman, was identified, and Roman's name surfaced, documents said. Roman was apparently staying at a home in Butler with the car's owner.

Police suspect Roman was driving the car when the robbery occurred. On July 17, police said they interviewed him at the barracks.

He allegedly admitted that he was with Acevedo-Carrasquillo at the Walmart and Acevedo-Carrasquillo told him to follow the victim's SUV when she left the store, documents said.

Roman said they “followed her to her house,” according to Palko's affidavit, “and (Acevedo-Carrasquillo) took the purse.”

He recounted that afterward they stopped at a convenience store in Butler and bought cigarettes, police said, before driving back to his house.

Investigators also have video surveillance that allegedly showed the suspects pull into that store in the Toyota about seven minutes after the woman called 911 to report being robbed, documents said.

During the interview, Roman was shown photos from the security footage at Walmart and the Butler store. “He identified himself and (Acevedo-Carrasquillo) in the photos,” Palko's affidavit said.

Additionally, police said, Roman told them that his alleged accomplice still had the victim's purse and her cell phone.

Police arrested Roman July 17. That same day, they got an arrest warrant for Acevedo-Carrasquillo.

On July 20, Acevedo-Carrasquillo was arrested and booked into the Marion County Jail in north central Florida, authorities said. He is being held on the warrant out of Pennsylvania, an official at the jail said Sunday.

His extradition back to Butler County is pending, police said.

Online court records did not indicate if either defendant has an attorney.
