Owner says restaurant open

WORTH TWP — Nobody was injured when a shed behind a Dairy Queen restaurant burned down Wednesday afternoon.

The shed, owned by Dairy Queen at 1230 West Park Road, caught fire just after 4 p.m. when high winds blew embers from a controlled fire onto the shed, according to Lt. Nick Yurkovich of the Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Company.

Yurkovich said a propane tank adjacent to the shed caught on fire after a release valve broke during the shed fire.

The Dairy Queen was evacuated by Slippery Rock Ambulance, Yurkovich said.

The propane tank, which serves the store, had to be shut off.

Beverly Kibler, owner of the DQ franchise, said the store itself will remain open, but the store cannot sell hamburgers, which are made using propane. However, all ice cream and fried foods can still be sold, she said.

“It was an accident, and accidents happen,” Kibler said of the fire.

The store is insured, but the shed is a total loss. Yurkovich estimates the damage at about $15,000 to $20,000, but Kibler said it might be higher since many paper products and cleaning supplies were kept in the shed.

In addition, the back of the Dairy Queen has paint bubbling, and it was unknown Wednesday afternoon if the fire affected the drive-through, she said.

The fire departments from Slippery Rock and Scott Township in Lawrence County were assisted by the Harrisville Volunteer Fire Company with the Unionville Volunteer Fire Department on stand-by.
