Butler Township prepares Preston Park for larger work in future
Butler Township’s board of commissioners signed off on Phase 1 of a larger project to dredge both of Preston Park’s ponds and to make repairs and improvements to their infrastructure.
Township manager Tom Knights said the primary work for the first phase involves widening and improving the road from the maintenance building to the edge of Carrie’s Pond for better heavy equipment access.
Township commissioners voted at a meeting last month to award the first phase of the project to W.M. Aiken & Son Excavating at a total cost of $514,145. Phase 1 of the project will also include stormwater retention efforts.
Work is anticipated to start the week of Oct. 5 and primarily take place throughout the month. The park will not close during the work, Knights said.
Eventually, the township plans to dredge Carrie’s and McCormick’s ponds for larger improvements, such as repairs on the dam for Carrie’s Pond.
But Knights said the project is mired in a lengthy permitting process that will likely delay the bulk of work until at least 2028.
Knights said a detailed exhibit of the township’s plan for the park will be presented at an October township meeting.
