YOUTH SPORTS

The Butler Middle School hockey team (7-3) completed a perfect December recently by defeating Franklin Regional, 5-1, over the weekend.

Brody Lineman stopped 22 of the 23 ahots he faced in goal. Trevor Gilliland scored three goals and Gavin Morrison one.

Ronan Miller scored the game-winning goal on the power play. Justin Strobel had two assists.

Earlier in the weekend, Butler defeated Seneca Valley, 7-2, in a battle for first place in their division. Gilliland scored five goals, Evan Kison and Connor Bachman adding one each.

Lineman made 25 saves.

Alex Ziglek scored both goals for Seneca Valley.

Junior varsity

Brendan Ackelson scored three goals, but Butler dropped a 6-5 decision to Seneca Valley. Colin Brady and Seth Queen also scored for the Golden Tor ado.

Josh McGowan had three assists. David Stepanian two. Zach Schnur made 19 saves in goal for Butler (3-4).

Wrestling

Butler’s junior high team placed sixth in the 14-team Titan Tournament, hosted by Shaler Saturday.

Riley Burdine at 210 pounds was the Golden Tornado’s lone champion. Saavon Moseby placed second at 250 pounds.

Donovan Malovich (122 pounds) and Christian Sequete (145) placed third while Braydon Hoffman (75), Shane Culp (138) and Dane Friedt all placed fourth.

Butler elementary wrestler Levi Donnel won the 8-under, 55-pound division at the South Side Beaver Open Tournament.

Vance Jackson placed third in the 12-under, 65-pound division and Donnel fourth in the 8-under 55-pound division at the Mars Open.

Knoch youth wrestler Daniel Long won the 8-under, 105-pound division in the Novice portion of the Mars tournament.

Eric Green won the 15-under, 127-pound division in the Open portion of the tournament. Fellow Knoch wrestlers Brendan Hinchberger (12-under, 115) and Sam Freyermuth (10-under, 105) placed second, Dalton Reed (12-under, 115) third, Christian Scheller (10-under, 75) fourth.

Basketball

Butler Junior High’s eighth-grade White team won the Seneca Valley Coach’s Tournament Saturday.

Butler (5-0) defeated Knoch 37-20, Seneca Valley 46-36 and Pine-Richland 50-39 in the championship game. Jacob Kradel scored 13 points against P-R with Luke Michalek and Conner Ollio adding eight each and Dominic Schmidt netting six.

John Michalek scored eight points against Knoch, Ollio added seven and Nicholas Kibbie six. Ollio scored 35 points and Luke Michalek eight against SV.
