County wrestlers stay alive

Louis Newell, a 106-pound Seneca Valley freshman wrestler, went 2-1 during the WPIAL Class AAA Wrestling Championships Thursday afternoon at the Giant Center in Hershey.

Newell decisioned Penn Manor’s Jordon Harsh 4-2 in the preliminary round, before dropping into the consolation bracket with an 8-2 loss to Tyson Klump of Nazareth. Newell moved on to the second round of consolations by pinning Cumberland Valley’s William Kaldes in 2:49.

Central Catholic senior and Cranberry Township resident Tony Palumbo also went 2-1. Palumbo decisioned Josh Trunk of Wisshickon 15-4 in the preliminary round before falling 4-3 to Cordy Cordes of Wyoming Valley-West.

He won in the first round of consolations with 9-3 victory over Punxsutawney’s Perry Arrington.
