Newell, Palumbo place at Pa. wrestling meet
HERSHEY — Two area wrestlers wound up on the medal stand Saturday night at the PIAA Wrestling Championships.
Seneca Valley freshman 106-pounder Louis Newell placed eighth in his weight class despite losing his final two consolation matches.
Newell dropped a 7-1 decision in overtime to Jakob Campbell of Boyertown. He then lost a 5-2 decision to Chris Wright of Central Dauphin in the seventh-eighth place match. Wright’s win was his 40th of the season.
Newell finished his freshman campaign at 35-8 for the Raiders.
Central Catholic 160-pounder Tony Palumbo, a Cranberry Township resident, placed fifth in his weight class.
Palumbo decision Frankie Krauss of Springford, 3-1 in overtime, in their fourth-round consolation match. He then lost a 1-0 decision to Noah Stewart of Mifflin County to drop into the fifth-place place match.
Palumbo rebounded by scoring a 3-1 decision in overtime against Bailey Shutt of Lower Dauphin to claim fifth.
Palumbo’s record was 30-8 this season.
