Volunteers prep Bundle Up

When Jack Frost brings frigid temperatures this winter, hundreds of needy people in Butler County will be able to weather his chilly gusts.

The Butler human services agency Center for Community Resources, in conjunction with the Butler Health System and the Butler Collaborative for Families, will have the annual Bundle Up Butler event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Butler City Farmer’s Market at 205 S. Chestnut St.

Coats, gloves, scarves, hats and blankets will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Hayley Merchant, CCR community outreach manager, said the goal is to distribute more than the 450 coats that were given out last year.

“We’re expecting to do about 600 coats this year,” Merchant said.

The coat drive was started in 2005 and evolved into the Bundle Up Butler event a few years ago.

As part of the Week of Caring efforts coordinated by the United Way of Butler and the Rotary Club of Butler, volunteers sorted through the winter clothing Thursday at the CCR office on Main Street.

The three volunteers from Butler County Community College’s human resources department bagged the garments by gender and size.

Volunteer Linda Dodd, director of BC3’s human resources and vice president of the CCR board, said the idea is to give back to the community.

“We’re excited to be part of it,” Dodd said.

Volunteer Tina Fleeger agreed: “This is a great way to help the needy.”

Jada Wallace volunteered to make a difference in people’s lives.

“It’s nice to help somebody make it through the winter,” Wallace said.

Merchant said volunteers were necessary to prepare for Bundle Up Butler on Tuesday.

“We really needed help separating the coats,” she said.

Merchant said CCR has roughly $1,000 in donated funds to spend on coats for teenage boys, which are in demand.

Boscov’s and Vanity Fair Outlet are selling coats for the clothing drive at a reduced rate.

First Impressions also will give away clothing for school-aged children during the event Tuesday.

CCR still is accepting coat donations.

Merchant said the agency keeps clothing on hand for people who can’t make it to the distribution or have an unforeseen need such as losing their belongings in a fire.

The annual Week of Caring, which is in its 19th year, mobilizes volunteers for hands-on projects to benefit nonprofit agencies and groups in the county.

Several other Week of Caring events dealing with poverty, community park improvements and youth this week were sponsored by CCR, Butler Township, and Butler County Children and Youth Services.
