WASHINGTON TWP — The fire that ignited inside a church youth center on Annisville Road Tuesday is not considered suspicious.

“I don’t suspect any foul play,” said state Trooper DuWayne Baird, deputy fire marshal. “There really is no apparent cause.”

Baird said the investigation is continuing.

Pastor Brent McMasters of the Six Points Church of God of Prophecy said a possible cause may be one of multiple battery operated items, including strobe lights, stored in a plastic tub inside the one-story building.

Baird estimated damages at $15,000. No one was injured.

McMasters said the 125-foot-by-75-foot building is structurally sound, but the interior of Yommer Hall sustained extensive smoke damage.

“It is closed,” he said. “We’re going to have to do extensive work in the building.”

McMasters said the church’s Spooky Woods tours still will occur outside the center at 1016 Annisville Road from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 14 and 15.

However, he said indoor activities are canceled.

“We’re scaling it back,” McMasters said.

The church, which owns the building, has used it as a youth center for several years.

McMasters said the center is insured, but the church still needs to raise money to fund a restoration.

The fire was reported at 11:44 a.m.

The church’s nearby thrift store was unaffected.
