Fantastic finish
BUTLERTWP — The scene was familiar, as was the excitement. Fortunately for the Butler girls track and field team, so was the result.
For the second consecutive year, the winner of Tuesday's Seneca Valley-Butler meet came down to one final event.
Last year, it was a victory in the shot put that gave Butler the meet.
This time, it was the triple jump that made the difference.
Seneca Valley's Jen Boyd captured the event, her third of the day, but Kendall Butch's second-place finish sewed up a 77-73 Tornado victory.
On the boys side, Doug Moran won three individual events to key Butler's 91-59 triumph.
"Hats off to Seneca Valley," said Butler girls coach Rod Harris. "They brought their team here ready to beat us. I thought it would be competitive, but it was very close. We fell apart a little bit on the track."
Hannah Rekich helped the Tornado cause by winning both hurdles events (16.1 seconds in the 100 and 48.4 in the 300), which were personal bests, according to Harris.
"And Lyndsy Day edged (Seneca Valley's DaLynn Mills) for second place, and that was big. Lea Renwick had a PR, 26.8, which was great for her, and won the 200,"Harris added.
Amanda Malecky also played a huge role, finishing second in the 400 behind Boyd by one-tenth of a second and also helped the 1,600-meter relay team to a crucial win with a time of 4:12.8.
That helped pull the Tornado (3-1) closer with the discus and triple jump still undecided.
"She was sick the whole meet," said Harris. "Originally, she was not in the 1,600 relay, but she pulled my arm and wanted to go in. I had four runners in line already, so I had to pull one and put her in.
"We don't have that 'W,' we lose. That was huge,"Harris added.
Seneca Valley coach Wayne Roccia knows meets like this are littered with near misses and things could easily have gone the other way.
"We've been preaching that," said Roccia. "This isn't a soccer game, not a football game. There are 150 points and somebody's gotta get them.
"I didn't think it would be this close," he added.
Boyd won the 400 in 1:03.8, finishing one-tenth of a second ahead of Malecky, won the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 10½ and took the triple jump with a measurement of 35-2¼, just one-quarter of an inch ahead of Butch, who did won the high jump and pole vault.
Emily Wolfarth won the 1,600 and 3,200 events while Mills won the 100 and had two second-place finishes in the long and high jumps for the Raiders (2-2).
The Tornado boys (3-1) got a huge meet from Moran, who won the 100 (10.9), 200 (22.7) and 400 (52.4), as well as Nolan Brink, who won the shot put (48-10) and the discus (146-3).
"Nolan had a good meet," said Butler coach Rick Schontz. "He won the shot put and had a PR in the discus."
Brian Burka won the 110 hurdles (15.6) and set a personal best in the 300 hurdles (41.2, good for second place behind Dan Dickey).
Other personal bests included Rob Miller, who won the 1,600 (4:38.1) and Mike Martin with a 44-5 in the triple jump to lead a Tornado sweep in the event.
Butler won the first five contested events on the track and won 13 of the 18 events, including all seven field events.
Butler will return to action Tuesday at Hampton while Seneca Valley will have a triangular meet against North Hills at North Allegheny.
