Student to be youth correspondent
FAIRFAX, Va. — Sam Huddleston, a junior at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart High School, was selected to represent Cranberry Township as a national youth correspondent to the 2015 Washington Journalism and Media Conference at George Mason University.
Sam was chosen based on academic accomplishments and a demonstrated interest and excellence in journalism and media studies.
In July, he will join a group of students from across the country for a weeklong intensive study of journalism and media.
Sam’s school activities include forensics team, volleyball and Character Alliance. He volunteers with the Miracle League of Southwest Pennsylvania and other organizations.
Sam is the son of John and Beth Huddleston of Cranberry Township.
Seneca Valley wins STEM competition
JACKSON TWP — A team from Seneca Valley School District won first place in a science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) regional competition.
Seneca Valley was one of five regional high school teams in the competition. The students researched, designed and presented devices and projects that could make life better for Pennsylvanians.
The Seneca Valley High School group included students Jonathan Dolfi, Cameron Rossi, Justin Stocklas, Lindsey Laurune and Josh Vargo, and their team advisers Dean Walker and Joseph Logsdon.
The team identified the invasive species of Emerald Ash Borer beetles and their effect on Pennsylvania’s forest health as a major problem in this area. The team developed a product to prevent the insect from infecting local forests.
The team will advance to the state finals where winners are eligible for college scholarships.
Riverview Intermediate Unit 6, Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV and Beaver Valley Intermediate Unit 27 organized the event.
