PARKER — Central Electric Cooperative announced Karns City High School juniors Samantha Gallaher and Andrea Shay and Union High School junior Jonathan Best were selected to attend the 2015 Rural Youth Tour in Washington. In June, they will join more than 1,600 students to meet congressional officials, learn about energy and electric cooperatives, and visit historic sites.

LATROBE — Biology major Kathryn Straatmann of Cranberry Township was inducted into the Saint Vincent College chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta, a national academic honor society. The induction honors academic achievement by students in their first year of college.

JACKSON TWP — Andrew Lingenfelter and Jared Jordan, students at Seneca Valley High School, earned awards at the 76th annual Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair at Heinz Field.
Lingenfelter, a senior, received a fourth place category award in physics and a special award from the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center for a simulation he created demonstrating the quantum mechanics theory of wave/particle duality.
Jordan, a sophomore, earned a special award from Duquesne University Department of Biological Sciences for his study of brain lateralization in echinoderms.
Seneca Valley High School students Valerie Jordan, Julia Kooser and Tom Zugell also presented their original scientific research projects.
The students competed with more than 1,000 other students from the Pittsburgh region.
