Seneca, Freeport students capture PJAS awards

UNIVERSITY PARK — More than 2,000 students in grades 7 to 12 competed at the State Meeting of Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS) at Penn State University.

The meeting followed regional competitions and stimulated interest and original ideas in science and math. Each student conducted a scientific investigation and presented their findings to a panel of judges.

Students from Seneca Valley School District and Freeport School District were among the participants.

The following students from Seneca Valley High School won awards:

First Place Award: Bailey Hixon and Julia Kooser

Partial scholarships to the Penn State Eberly College of Science: Noah Bowser and Tyler Lucas

NATRONA HEIGHTS — Caroline Lindey of Butler was granted a full scholarship to participate in the Constitutional Academy in Washington.

The weeklong event will host 50 students from across the country to hear lectures about constitutional principles from renowned scholars; participate in discussions and activities to apply the Constitution to current events; tour museums; and learn about college and career opportunities.

Caroline is a sophomore at Saint Joseph High School. She is the daughter of LaVerne and Patricia Lindey who are members of St. Fidelis Parish.

—–—JACKSON TWP — Seneca Valley senior Teresa Leatherow was chosen as the recipient of the Pittsburgh World Affairs Council's prestigious Donald E. Farr Award for 2015.Out of the thousands of students the organization serves each year, she was recognized for her enthusiastic interest in international affairs, her participation in programs of the World Affairs Council and her genuine efforts to understand the issues that shape the world.———CLARION — Victoria Reed of Worthington and Stephanie Croft of Butler were inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma at Clarion University.Beta Gamma Sigma is an international honor society that recognizes business excellence.Reed is the daughter of Greg and Audrey Reed of Worthington.Croft is the daughter of Dale and Debby Croft of Butler.
