WHITEHALL — With all the running Darius Frantz was doing Thursday, it was understandable to think he could have entered a fourth event.

Frantz, a senior jumper on the Freeport track and field team, already had his plate full competing in the high, long and triple jumps at the WPIAL Class AA Championships at Baldwin High.

Frantz captured the high jump title by equaling his personal best of 6 feet, 6 inches. He also placed fifth in the triple jump (42-4) and sixth in the long jump (20-11).

"I had to jump back and forth to get my jumps in," said Frantz after shuttling between the high and long jumps early in the meet.

"The high jump ... to hear your name in the same sentence as a WPIAL championship sounds great," he added.

By placing in the top five, Frantz qualified for the PIAA Championships, which will be held next Friday and Saturday at Shippensburg University.

Frantz landed a 6-6 at last week's WPIAL team championships, which the Yellowjackets boys won, but it didn't come easily Thursday.

Frantz missed on his first two attempts at 6-6, but made good on his final try.

With the triple jump still looming at the time, Frantz was able to relax a bit.

"It takes a little pressure off," said Frantz. "I just want to do my best and hopefully get a third medal."

Sure enough, Frantz did while teammate Alex Isenberg placed fourth with a leap of 42-7¼.

"Darius felt he could medal in three events, but didn't know where he would be," said Freeport coach Bill Dillen. "He and Alex did a nice job in the triple jump."

Isenberg also was part of two relays that qualified. The 3,200 relay team, which included Kevin Keppel, Garrett Blake and Nick Gentile, placed second with a time of 8 minutes, 16.83 seconds, while the 1,600 relay with Andy Teorsky, Marcel Ittner and Blake was third at 3:29.52.

Gentile, the defending 800 champion who set the record the event, didn't run it this time because of a reoccurrence of a respiratory problem from two weeks ago, but he did place third in the 400 (50.56).

Tyler Pajerski was the Yellowjackets' other state qualifier, placing fifth in the pole vault (12-6).

"It's been a great year with the kids," said Dillen. "They've done a nice job."

In the girls meet, the Freeport 1,600 relay team of Kamri Brestensky, Chelsea Chaffman, Alyson Moore and Taylor Bombalski was third with a time of 4:06.68.

Bronte Soul (triple jump) and Lynsey Gugino (300 hurdles) captured the fifth and final qualifying berths in their respective events.

"(Soul) is only a sophomore," said Dillen. "Once she gets her technique down, she'll get better."
