BROOKVILLE — Corinne Conto admits there was a weight on her shoulders Friday.

The Karns City senior, who was making her last appearance at the District 9 Class AA Track and Field Championships, wanted to close out her high school career at the PIAA meet next week at Shippensburg University.

"I definitely felt some pressure today, but I just tried to stay calm and focused," she said.

Conto's nerves settled long enough for her to set a personal best of 16 feet, 6½ inches in the long jump, good for first place at Brookville High.

The only other Butler County area girl to win a District 9 title Friday was Union's Lepha Logue, who topped the field in the triple jump.

Conto's previous best effort in the long jump was 16-6, set at the Mars Invitational last month and good enough to have given her a No. 2 seed at the district meet.

"Ultimately, I wanted to win today, but I would have been happy with either first or second place because that would get me to states," said Conto.

"To see any kid excel at an event like this, it's great," said Gremlins coach Roger King. "But when it's a kid who dedicates herself to getting better the way Corinne has, it just makes it that much more special.

"With the way she's been working all season, I figured she had a good shot at winning today," King added.

Logue set the bar high as a junior in 2009, setting the school record in the triple jump (35-1) and making the state meet by placing second at districts.

On Friday, she added a District 9 title to her resume with an effort of 34-½.

"The start of the season was a bit rough, I had (mononucleosis) from the end of basketball," said Logue. "I wanted to get back to the state meet. If I could go out there and finish my career by breaking the school record again, that would be unbelievable."

A-C Valley's Erika Rothen will be competing in the 300 hurdles at states and will run a leg of the Falcons' 400 relay.

The senior shaved a second off her personal-best time in the hurdles, placing second at 47.89 seconds.

She was responsible for the second leg of the relay and helped the team place second with a time of 51.96.

Her teammates included Meghan Cratty, Caroline Blauser and Emily Gardner.

"Our effort today was huge," said Rothen. "We're only one-tenth of a second from the school record."
