Renwick looks ahead
BUTLER TWP — Instead of dwelling on the past, Logan Renwick prefers to embrace the future.
That attitude will be quite helpful when the Butler graduate competes in indoor and outdoor track and field at Notre Dame starting this fall.
A right hamstring injury in the first week of practice kept Renwick off the track in the first part of the season.
But he worked his way back to compete in a couple of meets and the Baldwin Invitational before pulling the left hamstring at the WPIAL qualifiers at Butler.
"I was really disappointed, but I try to look on the bright side," said Renwick, who committed to Notre Dame in February. "I've got four more years to go."
Renwick had placed third in the triple jump at the WPIAL and PIAA championships as a sophomore, then was the WPIAL triple jump and 110-meter hurdles champion and a runner-up in the long jump and 300 hurdles as a junior.
He was a two-time Field MVP at the Butler Invitational and has won events at the Tri-State and Baldwin invitationals along the way.
The injuries, however, curtailed what could have been a big senior season.
"He was training most of his life for the little things you need (to do) to prevent that," said Butler boys coach Rick Schontz.
"When he's warming up, warming down, his training, he puts in the time. That's why when he was injured, it was such a surprise because he knows what to do," Schontz added.
But what's done is done, and Renwick is looking forward his time at Notre Dame, which he chose over Penn State, Virginia, North Carolina and Cornell.
Renwick still is rehabbing his hamstring, but said he believes he'll be up to speed soon.
"Once I get back in shape, I'll be doing some lifting, and running, and once I go to Notre Dame in August, I'll start working with the team."
Renwick said he probably will be limited to jumping events, at least during his freshman season.
"I think the choice will be where I've been most successful," Renwick said. "I love hurdling, but the triple jump is my best event."
After winning the triple jump at the WPIAL meet as a junior, he placed fourth in the state with a school-record effort of 48 feet, 1 inch, then he jumped a 48-6 at the Nike National Track and Field Championships a month later.
"I think he'll do really well there," said Schontz. "I think he'll jump well over 50 feet in the triple jump and 24 in the long jump. He's a great hurdler, but they may look at him as at multisport like a decathlete.
"Logan has such an awareness of his body. Eventually, he could be a Big East champion in an event," Schontz added.
With Notre Dame looming, Renwick said he can't completely put aside his injury, but he's come to terms with it.
"I've never really had something sideline me like this," said Renwick. "It's always in the back of my mind, but I don't worry about it. If you do, you'll never reach your full potential."
