Freeport fares well at qualifier
ADAMS TWP — The Freeport track and field program has a storied history.
But the Yellowjackets did something at the WPIAL Class AA Northern Qualifier at Mars High School Tuesday afternoon that they had never done before.
Three Freeport girls advanced to the WPIAL championships in the 1,600-meter run — a first for the program.
Kayla Zboran finished third in the event, Becca Dudek fifth and Rachael Kubeldis sixth to all punch their tickets to Baldwin and the WPIAL Track and Field Championships May 17.
“I'm unbelievably excited about that,” Kubeldis said. “I'm just happy that I'm here, because I didn't even expect to get here. So, to even make it to Baldwin is amazing to me.”
“We were really nervous about running the (3,200-meter relay) and then the mile,” Dudek added. “So to do this, was really the best-case scenario.”
And that wasn't even the biggest accomplishment for the Freeport girls on a very good day at the track.
The Yellowjackets' 3,200-meter relay team of Kubeldis, Dudek, Brittaney Bianco and Nicole Miller shaved three seconds off their season-best time and placed first, crossing the finish line at 10 minutes, 26.79 seconds.
The relay was able to win despite running without Zboran, who was nursing sore feet.
Miller filled for Zboran and Freeport didn't miss a beat.
“It feels really good to be able to sub in and help the team,” Miller said. “It's so cool to be able to run our best time of the season. It puts us, hopefully, in a good heat against teams that will push us next week.”
Dudek and Kubeldis are both grateful to have a runner like Miller waiting in the wings.
Miller has run in the relay in about half of the meets this season, so she's no stranger to the event.
“Nicole always does well for us,” Kubeldis said. “It's good to have five girls because no one relaxes. Everyone pushes everyone else.”
“We're really lucky to have such depth on this team,” Dudek added. “It helps that we're so close. We know no matter who runs, they are going to give 100 percent.”
Bronte Soul continued her domination for Freeport, winning the long jump and the triple jump.
“She's just an amazing girl,” said Freeport boys and girls track and field coach John Gaillot. “I really like her a lot — the deep-down competitive nature in her. That goes for all of our girls. They really don't like to lose.”
On the boys side, Freeport had a few good showings, led by a second-place finish in the pole vault by Alec Stivers and fourth-place finishes in the 100-meter dash by Brendan Lynch and in the 1,600 relay.
Summit Academy received a third-place finish in the long jump by Rashan Boone to highlight the Knights' effort Tuesday.
The Freeport girls have a WPIAL team championship meet on Thursday. Gaillot, though, told his girls to hold nothing back in the qualifier.
“Just compete every day. I don't care if we have eight meets in a row,” Gaillot said. “I expect them to compete and they should expect that themselves.”
Gaillot also has some high hopes for his individuals next week at Baldwin.
“Anything can happen,” Gaillot said. “We always tell them just give it all you have and better your time from the meet before. They've been doing it all year.”
