PUNXSUTAWNEY — Four baking and pastry students at Indiana (Pa.) University’s Academy of Culinary Arts have accepted professional externships.

Valerie Edwards will train at The Omni-Bedford Spring resort and spa in Bedford. At the academy, Edwards received dean’s list recognition.

She is the daughter of Scott and Amy Edwards of Freeport and a 2013 graduate of Lenape Vo-Tech High School.

Ashley Fasenmyer will train at The Biltmore Estate in Asheville, N.C. At the academy, she received dean’s list recognition and perfect attendance and high honors awards.

She is the daughter of Walter and Patti Fasenmyer of Rimersburg and a 2013 graduate of Union High School.

Rachel Soergel is an extern at Nemacolin Woodlands resort in Farmington. At the academy, she received dean’s list recognition and a perfect attendance award.

She is the daughter of Cheryl and Dale Soergel and a 2013 graduate of Mars High School.

Emily Rodgers is an extern at The Biltmore Estate in Asheville, N.C. At the academy, she received dean’s list recognition and perfect attendance and high honors awards.

She is the daughter of Dan and Bob Rodgers and a 2013 graduate of Knoch High School.

Jacob Cypher, a graduate of Butler High School, is the first awardee of the Kit Barkus Music Scholarship.

Cypher plans to major in music technology and guitar performance at Duquesne University.

The scholarship was established in 2014 to honor the late Kit Barkus and his love for music and guitar. It is awarded to a senior from Butler High School who plans to major in music at a college or university.

The scholarship is supported by donations from family, friends, businesses and others.

NATRONA HEIGHTS, Allegheny County — Caroline Lindey of Butler, a St. Joseph High School sophomore, is among 50 students nationwide who will participate in a weeklong Constitutional Academy in Washington, D.C., this summer.

She is on a full scholarship. During the event, she will hear lectures about constitutional principles, participate in discussions and activities to apply the constitution to current events, tour the National Mall and museums, and learn about college and career opportunities.

Caroline is the daughter of LaVerne and Patricia Lindey.

CHERRY TWP — Moniteau School District’s academic pentathlon team earned second place in the 2014-2015 USAD Pentathlon Online Nationals Competition.

The event is for middle-school students.

During the event, students demonstrated their knowledge of the curricular theme “Ingenuity and Innovations” by competing online against other schools in the nation in the areas of fine arts, math, science, social science and literature.

Moniteau’s team won 14 individual medals in the competition. Among the medalists were James Parenti who won the silver medal for the second highest total score of all students competing, and Amelia Brown who received the bronze medal for her overall performance.

Other team members who participated in the online competition were Will Tennent, Matt Dodgson, Alexis Watterson, Kyle Norling and Sonja Richmond. Presli Hollefreund and Danger Hodgkiss are also members of the Moniteau Pentathlon Team.

Melissa Baker is the team’s coach.

Butler Catholic School participated in the PJAS State Competition at Pennsylvania State University. Nine out of the 13 students participating received a first place award at the competition.

They were eighth graders Justin Higgins, Logan Lindey, Mia Maher, Thomas Preston, Tre Bartony and Julia Singleton.

Julia Singleton also received a perfect score of 5.0 for her presentation “Did You See That?”

Skylar Geibel and Anthony Ravasio, both seventh graders, received first place awards. Seventh graders Sarah Preston, Ava Swanson, Caravel Losch and Thomas Voelker received second place awards.

Returning Butler Catholic alumni Julie Kasunic, who attends Knoch High School, received two first place awards for her presentations in mathematics and computer science.

BRADYS BEND — The Bradys Bend American Legion Bishop-Madden Post 488 held the Jennifer Hogan-Hicks Memorial Essay Contest for sixth grade students.

The topic was three life changes they would have to make if they found out today that they have juvenile diabetes. Essays were scored on content, facts, effort, spelling and organization.

The following sixth graders at Chicora Elementary School received awards: Clare Bishop, first place; Emily Parker, second place; and Matthew Griffiths, third place.

The following sixth graders at Sugarcreek Elementary School received awards: Mira Codispot, first place; Katelyn Grazioli, second place; and Alex Conley, third place.

The late Jennifer Hogan-Hicks was a resident of East Brady who lived with juvenile diabetes. The contest promotes awareness of juvenile diabetes.
