UNIVERSITY PARK — Michelle Hartzell, a Penn State University student majoring in animal science, won a College of Agricultural Sciences Alumni Society Internship Award.

Hartzell was selected based on her educational internship plan, final report on the internship, employer evaluation and a letter of recommendation from her academic adviser.

She was an intern for the division of neonatology at the Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland. While there, she conducted a research project that developed an animal model for apnea of prematurity, a common respiratory disorder seen in 85 percent of premature infants.

Hartzell is a graduate of Slippery Rock High School and is a Schreyer Honors College scholar at Penn State. She is the daughter of George and Kathleen Hartzell of Slippery Rock.

IRVING, Texas — Elizabeth Depew, a University of Dallas student from Grove City, was one of four winners of an impromptu speech competition as part of a Communication in Business class in October.

During the competition, participants were each given three minutes to prepare a speech in which they had to interpret a given quote and argue whether or not they agreed with it.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Hunter Green of Butler was inducted into Sigma Alpha Lambda at Youngstown State University. Green is majoring in social work.

Sigma Alpha Lambda is a national leadership and honors organization that develops the individual and serves the campus and community.

ASHLAND, Ohio — Waylon O’Donnell of West Sunbury played the role of Gordon in “Dead Man’s Cell Phone” at the Studio Theatre of Ashland University.

O’Donnell is a theater major at the university and a 2015 graduate of Moniteau High School.
