Seneca Valley High School's Literary Works Club freshman team, Book, Line and Sinker, won first place at the IU 8 Interscholastic Reading Competition. The team included Ryan Lipscomb, Tori Beck, Lauren Testa, Olivia Otway, Rachel Covell, Savannah Glover, Josie Glover, Becca Cox, Sydni Roller, Kara Ristey, Katie Bablak and Jemima Roeckmann.

PITTSBURGH — More than 1,200 students representing 100 schools in Western Pennsylvania and Maryland competed for $1 million in cash prizes and scholarships at the Carnegie Science Center’s 77th annual Covestro Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair.

Scholarships and winners were announced at a ceremony at Heinz Field. First-place category award projects were displayed at Carnegie Science Center.

JACKSON TWP — Seneca Valley Literary Works students on April 5 had three teams with 36 students compete at Sidman, Cambria County, in the IU 8 Interscholastic reading competition.

Participating students fielded more than 100 questions from 40 books. The team of juniors and sophomores, Untitled, claimed second place. The freshmen team, Book, Line and Sinker, had a first place finish.

ANNVILLE — Ian Brown of Grove City was inducted into Sigma Alpha Pi at Lebanon Valley College.

Brown, a graduate of Grove City High School, is pursuing a bachelor of science and bachelor of arts in health science and music at the college.

Sigma Alpha Pi membership is limited to seniors who meet several criteria including a 3.6 GPA and a community service award.

Drew Weifenbaugh, a kindergarten student at HIS Kids Christian School, won John C. Maxwell’s the “Sometimes You Win — Sometimes You Learn For Kids Art Contest” for his age category.

To enter this national contest, Drew made a picture of his basketball team playing a team that kept scoring baskets. Instead of wanting to quit, his team still had smiles on their faces and continued working hard as a team.

As a contest winner, Drew received a case of Maxwell’s “Sometimes You Win — Sometimes You Learn For Kids” books. He donated them to his classmates, other classrooms at his school and Peter Bess, the youth librarian at the Butler Area Public Library.

DOYLESTOWN — Tarrah Freund of Renfrew was inducted into the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society at Delaware Valley University. To be inducted, students must have a GPA of 3.5 or better during their first full-time year.

BATON ROUGE, La. — Peter Frenchak of Butler, Taylor Kriley of Butler and Tammy Manko of Freeport were initiated into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi at Indiana (Pa.) University.

CLEMSON, S.C. — Allison Jansto of Harmony, received a graduate research fellowship from the National Science Foundation. She is a graduate student in chemical engineering at Clemson University.

Her research focuses on the relationship between the nanostructure, mechanical properties and performance of functional materials. The goal is to better understand the transport and mechanical properties of materials used in fuel cells and batteries.

MARIETTA, Ohio — Miranda Williams of Mars was recognized at the annual spring honors convocation at Marietta College.

Williams, who is a senior and majoring in graphic design, received the Who’s Who.

She is a graduate of Mars Senior High School.

INDIANA, Pa. — Local students have been selected for the Sutton Scholars academic achievement scholarship program at Indiana (Pa.) University. The students applied to be considered for the program and were chosen following an on-campus competitive interview process.

Shelby Dillon of Cranberry Township is the daughter of Jim Dillon and Shari Dillon and a senior at Seneca Valley High School. Shelby is a member of the National Honor Society, National Science Honor Society, Students Against Destructive Decisions, Best Buddies, Pottery Club and Medical Careers Club. She is senator of Key club. She plans to major in nursing at IUP.

Brandon Lynd of Cranberry Township is the son of P.J. Lynd of Cranberry Township and Christine Lynd of Lancaster Township. He is a senior at Seneca Valley High School and an honor roll student. He is a counselor for the YMCA and Cranberry Township Parks and Recreation. Brandon is a member of the Cranberry Township Baseball Athletic Association and a fundraiser for Cruisin’ for a Miracle. He plans to major in accounting at IUP.

Brendan Rae of Cranberry Township is the son of Jack and Tracy Rae and a senior at Seneca Valley High School. Brendan is a member of the National Honor Society and Seneca Valley In-Line Hockey. He is involved in community service and is a volunteer for World Vision Ministry and Gleeners food bank through Saint Ferdinand Roman Catholic Church. He plans to major in computer science/information assurance (cybersecurity) at IUP.

Marina Snowden of Prospect is the daughter of Kirk and Carol Brethauer and a senior at Slippery Rock High School. Marina is a member of the National Honor Society. She was the recipient for the Portersville-Prospect Rotary’s January Student of the Month award and serves as vice president of the Prospect Library teen advisory board. Marina is a volunteer for Slippery Rock Water Shed Coalition. She plans to major in speech language pathology and audiology at IUP.

Lauren Vokes of Cranberry Township is the daughter of Brian and Carin Vokes and a senior at Seneca Valley High School. She is a high honor roll student and member of the National Honor Society and National Science Honor Society. She is a member of the Seneca Valley High School volleyball team and Pittsburgh Three Rivers Volleyball Club. Lauren is a volunteer for Candy for Our Troops Community Project, Connoquenessing Valley Elementary School Science Days and Orphan Angels Cat Sanctuary. She plans to major in nursing at IUP.

Megan Richardson of Kittanning is the daughter of Jennifer and Matthew Richardson and a senior at Evangel Heights Christian Academy in Sarver. Megan is a member of the Honor Society. She is also a Sunday school teacher at Harvest Community Church, a Salvation Army volunteer, school newspaper editor, junior and senior class treasurer and a 3rd degree Taekwondo black belt. She plans to major in middle level and second level social studies education at IUP.

The scholarship can be renewed for four years of study. Sutton Scholarship recipients also are eligible for the Summer Scholars Academy, which provides scholarship funds for four years of summer course work.
