EVANS CITY — Danielle Matz, a Seneca Valley Senior High School student, learned the business of chemistry at the sixth annual BASF Science Academy. She represented Pennsylvania among 20 high school seniors interested in science, technology, engineering or math careers.
The two-week summer program, developed by BASF Corp., was at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey.
Student teams gained hands-on experience in chemistry laboratories and used BASF chemistry to formulate personal care products. They also developed marketing strategies. Students then presented the products to a panel of BASF executives and academic leaders.
As a graduate of the program, Matz received two transferable college credits.
EVANS CITY — Kathleen “Kat” Yellin, a student at Seneca Valley Intermediate High School, will live and study in Germany during the 2016-17 school year, as part of the Rotary Youth Exchange program.She will live with a family and attend school at Ernst-Haeckel-Gymnasium in Werder.She is the daughter of Jennifer and Michael Yellin of Zelienople.The Rotary Club of Evans City is the sponsoring club for Yellin.———SLIPPERY ROCK — Belle Hughes, a senior performance company member of Crossroads Dance Academy, recently won the title of Miss Showbiz 2016 at the Showbiz National Dance Competition.Both junior and senior performance companies of Crossroads Dance Academy participated in the competition. They received high awards in all categories.———INDIANA, Pa. — Hannah Hale of Zelienople was selected for the Sutton Scholars academic achievement scholarship program at Indiana (Pa.) University. She was selected for her very strong academics and outstanding promise.She is the daughter of Michael and Karen Hall and a 2016 graduate of Seneca Valley High School. She was a high honor roll student, won the VFW Voice of Democracy Audio-Essay competition and was selected for a Cook Honors College Merit Scholarship and a Hungarian Beneficial Society Scholarship.Hale volunteers with the Miracle League of Southwestern Pennsylvania and the Butler County Humane Society. She is a People to People Student Ambassador and was named to the National Society of High School Scholars.Hale will study ecology, conservation and environmental biology at IUP.The scholarship is renewable for four years of study.
———Emily Crilley of Butler, a student at Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic High School, was inducted into the National Society of High School Scholars in July.The society recognizes top scholars who have demonstrated “outstanding leadership, scholarship and community commitment.”The 16-year-old plays on the school golf team and is a member of the leadership team.
