Pullman to host PSU event
Another tournament is coming to Pullman Park.
The Penn State University Athletic Conference will hold its championship at the Butler ballpark May 1 and 2, director of stadium operations Dess Schnur announced Friday.
The PSUAC consists of all 14 Penn State branch campuses, 10 of which play baseball.
Once their regular season is complete, the top four teams meet for a two-day, double-elimination playoff to determine the league champion.
"We've always held the tournament at Medlar Field, a beautiful facility where the State College Spikes play," said PSU-Greater Allegheny athletic director and baseball coach Jim Chester. "But that field won't be available to us this time."
Because Chester is head of the PSUAC baseball committee, he was asked to find a field that could host the tournament.
"With all this snow, baseball fields may be a mess for a while," he said. "That turf infield at Pullman was a big selling point for us. We know we're going to get the games in there."
Schnur said the PSUAC event is the only college tournament scheduled for Pullman Park this season.
"But we're still trying," Schnur said. "With Butler High School using its own field this spring, we have a lot more available dates. For years, Butler practiced here six days a week."
Even with the Golden Tornado playing games at Pullman last year, Schnur said the ballpark hosted 18 regular season high school games last spring. This year, 21 prep games are already scheduled.
Knoch is playing all of its home games at Pullman.
The PSUAC has existed since 2002. The Penn State branch campuses used to play in the NJCAA, with Butler County Community College as a regular opponent.
Because the Penn State branches now are four-year programs, they've joined forces with the U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association, which operates separately from the NCAA.
"There's 100 schools in the USCAA," Chester said. "All of the teams are considered the same division. What we'll be bringing to Butler is solid, competitive collegiate baseball."
The Penn College of Technology in Williamsport has dominated PSUAC baseball play in recent years.
Schnur tried to land the PSAC Tournament, involving Slippery Rock University, Indiana (Pa.), California (Pa.), etc., but that event is being held in Johnstown. Pullman Park is in contention to host the PSAC tournament in 2011.
Numerous dates remain open at Pullman Park for the coming baseball season. Interested teams can call Schnur at 724-355-4889.
