Illegal drug use may have started a small fire under wooden exterior steps of a Fifth Avenue house this morning.

Butler Fire Chief Nick Ban said drug paraphernalia was found by burned wood panels under the steps at a house in the 100 block of Fifth Avenue.

Ban said one of the three-floor home’s occupants used a fire extinguisher to douse the fire.

After responding to the 5:57 a.m. 911 call, Butler firefighters hosed down the hot spots to ensure the blaze would not reignite.

Ban estimated damages at $100.

Crews cleared the scene at 6:43 a.m.
