Cranberry Township seeking PennDOT funds for plans to ease traffic circulation at a difficult intersection

CRANBERRY TWP — Grant funding through PennDOT’s Multimodal Transportation Fund program could help improve traffic flow at the intersection of Routes 19 and 288 in the township.

Supervisors unanimously voted to approve submission of the grant application in the amount of $1,500,000 at the Thursday, Oct. 29, agenda preparation meeting.

“There are some improvements we can make there that will improve capacity, and they’re pretty simple,” said Dan Santoro, township manager.

Trucks traveling southbound can only use the right of the two left turn lanes at the intersection, Santoro said. He referred to that turn as “one of our most challenging movements in the township.”

If trucks are allowed to use both of the left turn lanes, that would improve turning capacity, he explained.

“In order to do that, we really have to pull back the nose of the (traffic) island on (route) 228,” said Santoro. The grant funds, if acquired, would support this work, among other related modifications.
