Man gets too close to eagles

Violation leads to fine of $75

PITTSBURGH — A Parker man was fined $75 for getting too close to the bald eagle nest that overlooks the Monongahela River in the city’s Hays section.

Thomas Kesten, 61, and his grandson were found trespassing in the 220-yard exclusion zone around the eagle’s nest on Jan. 4, authorities said.

“He and his grandson saw the signs and continued to walk into the zone,” said Gary Fujak, a wildlife conservation officer for the Pennsylvania Game Commission. “They were caught within 100 yards of the eagles.”

Fujak said he was out on his regular patrol of the zone when he saw Kesten and his grandson sitting and watching the eagles. Video from the surveillance cameras later showed Kesten walking past the stay out signs, Fujak said.

While in violation of the buffer zone, Kesten was not doing anything malicious, Fujak said.

“Nothing other than disturbing the area, but that’s pretty serious in our eyes,” he said.

More serious offenders directly harassing the eagles could face federal violations.

Fujak said there have been two other violators caught in the zone since December.

The eagle’s nest is home to three eggs.
