This March is filled with indifference

As reporters, we all like the facts.

We like to delve into the details, look at things from different angles and perspectives, then form an opinion that we can write about.

I didn’t care to do any of the those things following Pitt’s 71-70 loss to Butler in the NCAA tournament Saturday.

I was away from home during the first half of the game, but really had no desire to watch any of it.

I didn’t didn’t seem to care when Pitt imploded and lost the game. I didn’t get mad or upset — I just didn’t care.

I think my wife was a little surprised by it all.

Pitt, my alma mater, always has made me nervous in the NCAA tournament.

Several years of disappointments might have created that. But for some reason, I’ve had zero interest in watching any games this season. None.

I used to love this time of year. After the pairings were announced, I studied the teams, looked for possible upsets, filled out the brackets, then watched the excitement of Thursday and Friday basketball starting at noon, then keeping up with the games the rest of the two days.

Those are by far the best two days of basketball — college or pro — each season.

This year, however, was different.

I didn’t fill out my bracket Wednesday afternoon, had no interest whatsoever in following the four play-in games, which were considered the first round, and didn’t give a thought at noon Thursday that there were any games on.

I didn’t watch more than 30 seconds of any contest until I got home late Friday night and caught the end of a game that I can’t even remember right now.

I didn’t even care enough to mark the winners and losers on my bracket. I just yawned when I thought about the next round.

I’d love to say I know why my interest dropped significantly in one year, but I just don’t seem to care about it this year.

Perhaps if Pitt still had a shot at the making that long-awaited Final Four, which it hasn’t done since 1941, the interest might have been there. However, it wasn’t there during the week building up to the tournament.

Maybe my interests have changed, that I have more important things to occupy my mind.

No matter, I still check the scores and circle my winners with each passing round.

It would be nice to finish the tournament on top — after all, it’s not about the money, but the prestige — but even if I win, it won’t feel the same.

Maybe I’ve just lost interest in college basketball. I don’t watch it during the regular season. Pitt basketball always has disappointed me this time of year, but I’ve prepared myself for it.

It seems the same can be said for college basketball. It’s like I’ve seen all this before.

Maybe next year.
