MARIANNA — Consol Energy plans to close its 84 mine in southwestern Pennsylvania in about two months, citing dropping coal prices in the sluggish economy.About 260 miners work at the mine in Amwell Township, about 25 miles south of Pittsburgh. In October, Consol announced it would lay off 50 miners but otherwise planned to keep the mine open to supply coal to the steel industry. Consol spokesman Tom Hoffman says the mine could reopen.
