GoFundMe launched for family who lost home in Summit Township fire

Summit Township fire

Kyle Salka grabbed a fire extinguisher and ran toward the fire Tuesday, Oct. 27, to try to save the home where he lived with his wife, two kids and two dogs, but it was too late.

The family’s home along Route 422 was a complete loss after a fire began in the corner of the garage, according to Herman Fire Chief Robby Schuler. The fire had consumed the garage and was spreading toward the house before Kyle got to it, according to a GoFundMe started by Fireproof — East Brady.

The family made it out unscathed, but lost their primary residence, the garage, a mobile home and their belongings, according to the GoFundMe. Their children, ages 1 and 2, were left with no belongings.

The fire started at about 8:23 p.m. The cause of the fire is unknown, but it’s not under investigation from the fire marshal, as the fire department and homeowner do not believe anything suspicious happened.

“When tragedy strikes, we have a choice. We can stand by and watch, or we can stand together and make a difference,” wrote Daniel Weidenhof, who operates Fireproof — East Brady.

The family is also looking for Pampers size 4 and 5, 2t girl’s clothes and 3t boy’s clothes. They are staying with a friend.

The fundraiser aims to raise $11,000.
