Man in prison faces multiple charges
A suspected fugitive nabbed over the weekend likely won’t get out of prison soon.
Matthew A. Hertzig, 32, of Karns City has six criminal cases awaiting him as he sits in the Butler County Prison.
Butler police arrested Hertzig late Saturday night after officers found him and another man staggering around in the 100 block of Mercer Street.
The pair were apparently under the influence of drugs when police found them reeling just before 10:30 p.m., according to court documents.
Police said Hertzig tried to hide a syringe in the grass after officers stopped him. Later, a search turned up a second syringe in his shorts pocket.
Officers soon after finding Hertzig learned that he was wanted on unrelated arrest warrants.
District Judge Sue Haggerty on Sunday arraigned him on charges of possessing drug paraphernalia and public drunkenness, and charges stemming from two of the warrants.
Among the warrants is a felony case that dates back to Aug. 2 when Hertzig illegally tried to buy a pistol from a Washington Township gun store.
Police allege Hertzig lied on his application to buy the firearm at Logan’s Gun Gallery on North Washington Road.
In completing a federal form required to buy the .22-caliber pistol, Hertzig wrote that he was not convicted of certain crimes that would prohibit him from having a gun.
But when his information was entered into the Pennsylvania Instant Check system, he was denied the purchase due to his criminal record, court documents said.
Haggerty arraigned Hertzig on charges of unlawfully attempting to buy a firearm, a felony, and unsworn falsification to authorities, a misdemeanor.
Additionally, Haggerty arraigned him on charges in connection with a warrant for shoplifting watches and rings March 5 at the Kmart store at the Pullman Square shopping plaza.
City police suspect Hertzig was drunk when he drove to the store. He is charged with retail theft, driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license and possessing drug paraphernalia.
Following his arraignment Sunday, he was placed in prison on $17,000 bail.
Meanwhile, police discovered that Hertzig last week had allegedly stolen a number of items from the home of friends where he had been staying for more than a week.
Samantha McConnell and Mario Robinson told police Sunday that the defendant took a cell phone, Xbox game console, rings and other property valued at a combined $1,085 from their home on Mitchell Avenue.
The couple reported the theft Sunday.
Police said Hertzig faces charges of theft and receiving stolen property.
Court records show that Hertzig also is wanted on another arrest warrant for possession of drug paraphernalia March 19 in Donegal Township.
In yet another case, Butler police earlier this month charged him with shoplifting clothing and footwear from the Kmart on May 1.
A back pack he brought to the store turned up a bag of suspected marijuana and other drug contraband, documents said.
Police on May 6 charged him in that case with retail theft, possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia, possession of a small amount of marijuana, and public drunkenness.
