Butler High grad's

Medal of Honor will go on display

PITTSBURGH — A 1931 Butler High School graduate’s Medal of Honor will be on display this weekend at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum.

John J. Pinder Jr. was awarded the medal posthumously for his actions on Omaha Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944.

The award, presented in January 1945, was one of only four given for action on Omaha Beach.

Pinder died on D-Day on his 32nd birthday while repeatedly traversing the beach to retrieve vital communications equipment. He was hit by enemy fire several times.

The display is part of a Memorial Day celebration at the museum from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A ceremony to remember all Pennsylvania service members who died during the War on Terrorism will be at 10:30 a.m. in the auditorium. Nearly 300 service members from the state have died in Afghanistan and Iraq.

There will be free admission to the museum during the day.
