Alissa Smith of Cranberry Township was one of just eight exemplary Baldwin Wallace University graduating seniors, out of 814 members of the class of 2013, singled out to receive BW’s Outstanding Senior Award. This high honor recognizes students who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in all areas of their university endeavors.
Smith was described by her nominators as “humble, caring, reliable and hardworking.” She studied in China and served as a resident assistant and campus tour guide. She was a member of the Circle K International service organization, the BW marching band and both the Omicron Delta Epsilon and Alpha Lambda Delta honor societies.
She graduated with a degree in economics and business administration.

Kaitlyn Hammel of Cranberry Township is one of 20 university students from institutions across the country who have been accepted into the Governor’s Summer Internship Program. The program is administered by the Shriver Center at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and gives students the opportunity to work on substantive projects with senior-level public administrators and policy makers in Maryland state government.
Hammel, a student in the class of 2014 at Loyola University of Maryland, will be an intern at the Maryland State Department of Education. Her major is elementary education.

Grove City Medical Center’s volunteer organization recently presented its Mary Ellen Liggitt Healthcare Scholarship to Evan Mysliwiec, Kara McClain and Payton McClearn.
Mysliwiec, a 2013 graduate of Slippery Rock High School, will attend Slippery Rock University in the fall and major in exercise science/physical therapy as he pursues his doctor of physical therapy.
McClain, a 2013 graduate of Grove City High School, will attend Indiana (Pa.) University’s Honors College and major in nursing as she pursues her bachelor’s in nursing.
Both Mysliwiec and McClain participated in Grove City Medical Center’s teenage volunteer program, spending their summer breaks in the hospital’s physical therapy department.
McClearn is a 2013 graduate of Grove City High School. She will enter UPMC Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in the fall to complete a two-year course of study.

The Brady’s Bend American Legion Bishop-Madden Post 488 held the Jennifer Hogan-Hicks Essay Contest for sixth grade students.
The topic was three life changes they would make if they found out that they had juvenile diabetes. The late Jennifer Hogan-Hicks of East Brady lost her life at age 34 because of the disease, and the essay contest raises community awareness of the disease.
At Chicora Elementary School, Sierra LeRoy, daughter of Rebecca Brandon and Chuck LeRoy, won first place. Kyleigh Fleeger, daughter of Michael and Kristen Fleeger, won second place. Cambree Powers, daughter of Steve and Heather Powers, won third place.
At Sugarcreek Elementary School, Jasmine Fennell, daughter of William and Kimberly Fennell, won first place. Megan Lessner, daughter of Scott and Renee Lessner, won second place. Joshua Wimer, son of Brian and Kim Wimer, won third place.

Butler High School students Mathieu Vavro, Kayla Gallagher, Caitie Shaw, Sarah Pfabe, Rebecca Walowen, Jocelyn Miller, Tyler Vicari and Micah Hamby competed in various events during the Future Business Leaders of America State Competition.
Matt Vavro will represent Butler High School in Anaheim, Calif., at the FBLA National Leadership Conference and Competition.
In the last five years, Butler has qualified seven students at the national level.

Jonathan Thompson of Slippery Rock, a fifth grade student at Slippery Rock Elementary, was selected for the Carnegie Mellon University C-MITES summer program for academically talented students. He will attend the Solve a Murder Mystery class at St. Alexis Catholic School. He is the son of Bryan and Holly Thompson of Slippery Rock.
