Butler mulls dress code revisions
BUTLER TWP — Butler school administrators are proposing changes to the dress code.
A team of principals, students and teachers from the intermediate and senior high schools recently studied the dress code and presented revisions to the school board Monday night.
John Wyllie, high school principal, said the group looked at what other districts have for dress codes and considered what would be realistic to enforce.
Torn or ragged clothing will now be allowed, as long as the holes or tears are below the fingertips with arms fully extended at one's sides.
The fingertip test for length of shorts and skirts was kept in the policy, though an exception was added for leggings, saying that they may be worn as long as a top “falls below the buttocks.”
A prohibition on cutoff shorts, gym shorts and swim suits is removed.
Students created a diagram for the student handbook showing what areas of the body must be covered.
The board approved a first reading of the new policy, though not all the members were in agreement. Jennifer Cummings said she thinks the fingertip rule is unfair because some students have longer arms.
