Driver, 26, dies in early Sunday crash on Route 65

SLIPPERY ROCK TWP, Lawrence County — A suspected drunken driver was killed early Sunday morning when he lost control of his car and crashed on Route 65, authorities said.

Justin P. Delaney, 26, of New Castle died at the scene of the wreck about 1:45 a.m. in Slippery Rock Township.

State police said Delaney was traveling south on Route 65, also known as Ellwood Road, when his 2000 Chrysler Sebring convertible crossed the center line.

The car went off the east berm and struck a mailbox and ditch, according to a police report, before hitting a tree in the front yard of a home. The vehicle ended on its passenger side.

A Lawrence County deputy coroner pronounced Delaney dead. He was not wearing a seatbelt.

Police said they suspect he was driving under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance. The investigation continues, police said.

The Shenango Township Police Department and Shenango and Slippery Rock Township volunteer firefighters assisted troopers at the scene.
