Rig spills diesel on I-79
LANCASTER TWP — A tractor-trailer crash early this morning spilled about 125 gallons of diesel fuel onto Interstate 79 and closed at least one of the northbound lanes, authorities said.
The Butler County Hazardous Materials Team assisted state police and Harmony volunteer firefighters who were called to the wreck that happened just after 3:15 a.m.
Authorities said Joseph Paternostro of New York lost control of the rig while southbound about 2½ miles north of the Zelienople.
The tractor-trailer traveled into the median and ended in the northbound lanes, but not before rupturing its fuel tank. Police said there were no injuries.
Steve Bicehouse, the county’s director of emergency services, said that a Hazmat crew was sent about 4:10 a.m. to help clean up the fuel spill
No waterways were threatened, and the Hazmat detail was completed by 7 a.m.
State officials were notified but it was not immediately known if the Pennsylvania Environment of Protection sent any inspectors to monitor the cleanup effort.
The crash remains under investigation.
