Man injured while cutting tree

Helicopter takes him to hospital

FRANKLIN TWP — A man suffered head and neck injuries Saturday afternoon when a tree he was cutting apparently fell on him in woods near his home on Isle Road, authorities said.

The man, believed to be in his mid-40s, managed to walk 50 to 60 yards out of the woods and into a clearing, where he called his wife on a cell phone. His wife, in turn, called 911.

Prospect firefighters and a Butler Ambulance Service crew found the man, whose name has not been released, in a hay field.

“He was conscious but dazed and confused,” said Ken Wilson, assistant chief for the Prospect Volunteer Fire Department. “He was bleeding and had a couple of cuts to the back and side of his head.”

Additionally, he was complaining of severe neck pain.

The man told rescuers that he had been cutting down fire wood with a chain saw when the accident happened. He suspected a tree came down on top of him but he wasn’t certain what happened.

“He said he lost consciousness and didn’t remember anything,” Wilson said.

A medical helicopter was called in, landing in the hay field. The man was taken to an unknown Pittsburgh hospital for treatment. His condition was not known this morning.
