With the Independence Health System and West Virginia University Health System acquisition official as of Oct. 1, WVU Medicine has made changes to the executive leadership team for Butler Memorial and Clarion hospitals.

Matthew Schnur has been elevated to president and CEO of Butler Memorial and Clarion hospitals after serving as president of the two hospitals for about a year and a half when it was Independence Health System.

Schnur, who was born at Butler Memorial Hospital, started working at the hospital about 14 years ago as a staff pharmacist, advancing through clinical pharmacy to become director of pharmacy, as well as vice president of ancillary services.

“Matt is a strong leader who understands these hospitals, the people who make them special and the communities that depend on them,” said Albert Wright Jr., president and CEO of WVU Health System. “He has earned the trust and respect of his colleagues through years of service, and he brings the experience, judgment and commitment we need as we build the future of Butler Memorial and Clarion.”

The remainder of the executive leadership team for Butler Memorial and Clarion hospitals includes Michael Fiorina, who will serve as chief medical officer. He most recently served as chief medical officer for Independence Health System after previously serving as associate chief medical officer for the two hospitals.

Mindy Dunkerley, who previously served as chief quality officer for Independence Health System, is now vice president of quality and regulatory affairs. She is a Butler County native with nearly 30 years of healthcare leadership experience.

Then, David Rottinghaus, president of the affiliated medical groups, will continue in his current role for WVU Medicine. He is an active emergency medicine physician at Butler Memorial Hospital and also served as president of the physician and provider network for Independence Health System.

Thomas Albanesi, interim chief financial officer, will serve in the role while the WVU Medicine conducts a search for a permanent chief financial officer for Butler Memorial Hospital and Clarion Hospital.

WVU Medicine is also recruiting a chief operating officer for Butler Memorial Hospital and a director of operations for Clarion Hospital.
