Thousands lose power due to strong wind gusts

A city street department employee looks over a downed tree limb along N. McKean St during last night's windy weather. The falling limb pulled the electric service cable away from the home at 413 N. McKean but the power remained on.

High winds caused some problems for residents around Butler County Tuesday night and this morning.

There were seven 911 calls Tuesday between 6:43 p.m. and midnight for wires down and two calls early today, according to county 911 records.

Winds gusting to 40 and 50 mph caused damage to trees and electrical lines, knocking out power to more than 5,000 people in the county, said Todd Meyers, West Penn Power spokesman.

The hardest hit areas were the eastern part of the county between Butler and over to Kittanning in Armstrong County, Meyers said.

There were also outages in the Slippery Rock area and Forward Township.

There were about 150 customers without service this morning, including 92 in Parker Township. The company expected all service to be restored by 8 p.m.

Central Electric Cooperative reported no customers without power.
