Changes raise cost of new stadium

Freeport board mulls approval

BUFFALO TWP — The Freeport School Board will consider several change orders for its athletic stadium, which would further increase the $3.6 million cost.

Several board members were upset Thursday night by the changes requested, saying that VEBH Architects of Pittsburgh should have included them in the original design of the stadium.

Superintendent Ian Magness at the school board meeting presented the requests, many of which came from VEBH Architects.

The changes included $12,340 for widening the curb around the field, allowing posts for the field’s fence to be installed there rather than a nearby walkway, and about $13,000 for directional signs at the stadium and through the campus.

Other changes requested include $8,400 for fencing to enclose the bottom part of the bleachers to prevent people from climbing underneath them, $4,483 for a roof track system at the concession stand, which would prevent the walls of the unheated building from cracking during temperature changes; and $2,100 for extra electrical outlets in the concession stand.

Magness did say the district was able to negotiate the cost of putting a Yellowjacket logo in the center of the field and reduce that cost to $3,000.

He said the district has required all change orders to be approved by the school board before any work is done. The board is expected to vote on them next Thursday.

Of the changes, board member Barbara Toy-Gaydos said, “This is ridiculous.”

Board member John Marty said, “I think the architect should pay.”

Board member Michael Huth noted the stadium is costing several million dollars, so it should be done right. However, he said he was disappointed many of these items were not included originally.

Board member Frank Borrelli said he would like the architect at the meeting next Thursday to answer questions. Magness said he can put that request in.

The stadium on the high school campus will be for football, girls lacrosse, and girls and boys soccer. It will have seating for 2,000.

Of the overall project, Magness said, “We are making very, very good progress.”
