Laini Spohn, a second-grader at HIS Kids Christian School, is all smiles before hitting her teacher Kayla Davis with a pie during “Clowning Around for Literacy,” the school’s celebration of “Read Across America.” Students from preschool through sixth grade were challenged to read 200 books during the week, but they far surpassed expectations by reading 357 books. One of the rewards the students received was to throw a pie at Davis.
